Advice please, Yukka plant dying back

Dear Garden Guide,

We recently moved into a house which had two Yucca plants growing in separate garden beds, directly opposite each other.  They would have been about two metres tall and had masses of new shoots growing from the bases, which made them look extremely jumbled and very untidy.  As I pruned Yucca plants before, I cut the tops off and removed all the base plants.  As you can see by the attached photo's, the first plant has come on beautifully.  However, the second plant recently started browning off at the tips and looks like it is dying.  Can you please help ? We live in Thronlands, Brisbane.  Many thanks, Lyn.

Flower spike from flax plant - Julie

Hi there,

My monther wanted me to find out what has happened to her plant (I have no idea of what type of plant it is as I have no gardening experience).  I have sent you a picture.  In the picture you will see a huge stalk that was not there previously and it has grown up through the middle, only taking around 2 months for it to get to that size.  It is so tall that you can see it from the bottom of her street and it's taller than most of the gum trees.  Would you know why this has happened as we are all amazed at how tall it has gotten in such a short space of time. Julie Baulkham Hills, Sydney.

Answer:

 Hi Julie,

From the photo you sent us the plant looks like a flax plant, the large stalk that is growing from the centre is a flower spike.   These can grow quite large.   If it is a flax, as it is a bit hard to tell from the photo, then it will flower again, every couple of years.   The plant also looks a little like a "century plant"  these are a little different and generally only flower once in their lifetime.  After flowering the plant dies.    In regard to the flower spike you will have to remove it once the flowering has finished as due to it's large size it is likely that it will fall over and rip the plant out of the ground.   You will know when the flowering has finished as the spike will start to dry up and goes a brown colour.

Canna plants becoming a weed ? Guy - Victoria

Hi,

I have some Canna Lillies in my garden which I would like to remove.    They keep coming up no matter what I do.  I have tried weed poison in the form of round-up and it has not worked.    Could you give me any ideas on how to kill these plants which have become a weed in my garden.  Guy, Melbourne Victoria.
