Weed control Garden Mulch with lots of weeds !!

Hello,

We live in the eastern suburbs of melbourne and a landscaper has replaced our lawn area with mulch.   I was told that weed mats don't work, but within 3-4 days we had weeds growing through !!  Is a weed mat a more useful way to solve the problem ?  Thanks Michael, Melbourne Vic

Yucca growing very large - Kim, NSW

Hi,

We planted a Yukka in our garden, adjacent to our water feature 4 years ago, it has become massive, with a trunk about the size of a bread and butter plate and still growing.     Can I transplant them or cut them back ?     What is the best way to do this,  they are close to six feet tall.  Thanks Kim

Raised vegetable garden made over concrete slab

Hi,

Can we place a raised vegetable garden bed over a concrete slab.  We are planning to raise the bed to 600mm high with drain holes.  Thanks Darren

Answer:

Hi Darren,

I think making a vegetable garden is an an excellent idea.   It is a good use of an area which is no longer of use otherwise.   There are no reasons why you should not make a raised bed on concrete.    Your suggestion to make it 600mm high is also a good idea.  I would suggest however to use a well drained soil mix to stop drainage issues.      Drainage is a very important issue when it comes to growing vegetables, so allow water to drain away from the base of the beds.

Identify this tree please - Christine - Newcastle

Hi

I have a 15 year old tree which was labelled Alnus acuminata when I bought it.   I bought it as we have boggy soil and to grow quickly and it has worked brilliantly.    However, I 've recenlty have been reading about this tree (the tree indicated on the lable) in books, and it bears no resemblance to the tree we have.    Can you identify this tree for us, we have enclosed a photo.   Christine, Newcastle NSW
