Magnolia grandifora is a medium to large tree that has been used as an attractive garden tree for many years. This particular Magnolia comes from the southern part of north America. The tree is evergreen and has large glossy green leaves around 6 inches long with a brown underside. This evergreen Magnolia produces large perfumed white flowers in late spring and through summer. Trees generally grow from 8 to 12 m tall . They are not a particularly fast growing tree, but the tree has the benefit of flowering even at an early stage of development and usually within the first 3 or 4 years the tree will start to flower. This tree can grow in a range of soil types, even heavy soils, but grows best in fertile, well drained loams. Evergreen magnolia trees grow best in temperate climates where the winter are not too cold. Trees prefer good soil moisture, however established trees have proven to withstand droughts, although under stress. Trees usually live a long time, 100years plus. There are many new varieties of evergreen Magnolia on the nursery market, such as Exmouth and Greenback, these tend to be smaller trees more suited to a smaller gardens. The Magnolia Little Gem is a very small or dwarf variety of around 3 to 4 m this tree is an excellent small tree for the home garden.

Crepe Myrtle is a another excellent white flowering feature tree for the home garden. There are numerous varieties of all shapes from large shrubs of around 2m up to trees of around 7m . All varieties tend to produce masses of flowers during the summer months and tend to flower around 3 months of the year. There are a number of white flowering varieties, but Crepe Myrtles are known also for many other flower colours including purples and pinks. Crepe Myrtles are deciduous trees, losing their leaves in winter. Lagerstroemia varieties are surprisingly hardy trees, they do not require a great deal of water once established and can be considered drought tolerant. They are used extensively as park and street trees, and will grow in almost any soil, even clay soils where many other trees will not grow well. Trees will grow in temperate to cool temperate regions, so if you live in a cold winters this may be a good choice for your garden. Trees usually live for around 60 years plus.

Gordonia plants are a group to plants that develop large and numerous white flowers during the winter months in temperate climates. Gordonia plants range from shrubs up to trees. Most of the tree varieties will grow around 5 or 6m, so are not large trees. Gordonia plants are usually board in habit, but can be pruned into a large hedge if required. Leaves of the plant are glossy and around 10cm long. Flowers are single with a yellow centre, usually the plants are covered with flowers in winter and tend to flower for around two to three months. In regard to soils treat Gordonia plants in the same manner as Camellia shrubs, they prefer loam soil. However, Gordonia plants may even be slightly more hardy to heavy soils then camellia shrubs. Best climates for Gordonia trees/shrubs is a temperate climate. But they will grow within the range of various temperate climates, cool temperate to warm temperate. Plants live a long time around 50 years plus.
