With this kit you get the following:
(We can not send seeds to WA or TAS so if you live in those states we will send you an extra packet of plant ties. The seed varieties for other states are a little bit of a lucky dip, but we will try and send useful seeds for that particular season, Eg chives and parsley are always handy )
Makes a great gift for a gardener and is a fun way for kids to learn about growing plants.
You get two plastic propagation units in the kit. Each mini greenhouse, seed raising propagation unit is 38cm x 24cm. The units come in three parts, a drip tray, a 24 cell punnet tray and a clear plastic lid. The units can be re-used many times. Unlike many other propagation trays, the cells are quite large, which means they retain a bit extra moisture, and also provide for a bigger root system. So, if you like to get your seedlings a bit larger then normal before planting out, this system will allow for it. With these units you can grow flowers seedlings, or vegetable seedlings.
Why are we sending you two units in the kit ?
Having grown vegetables and flowers, we realise you need to have enough seedlings to supply your garden. So, we have put two propagation units in the kit. You can plant your seedlings all out at once. Or you can plant them in stages. Eg, plant out Carrots one week in one unit, and Silverbeat the next week in the other unit. This way you have a rotating supply of seedlings.
Where do grow your seedlings ?
Because these units have a lid, it assists in maintaining moisture. They act like mini greenhouses helping your seeds germinate. The best place to put your seedlings is on a veranda or patio in a semi-shade position. Once the seeds are up, put them in a sunny spot. You can also keep the units inside, say the kitchen, or sun room till they germinate, then put them out in the sun. Having a lid on your propagator also keeps out most pest (like snails).
One of the most handy items a gardener can have is a moisture meter. And this ones has a long probe (20cm) which allow you to get a reading deep into the soil. One of the main reasons people have problems with growing things, is that their soil is either, too wet, or too dry. Now you will know if your soil needs more water.
Using a moisture meter for lawns-
These probes are also great for lawns, which can develop dry spots. Just check around the lawn to find out if these areas are dry.
Using a moisture meter for pots-
The moisture in pot plants can also be easily read by using this moisture probe. Once again, people either water their pots too much, or not enough.
Using a moisture meter to estimate soil quality-
Once you develop skill using your moisture meter you will be able to estimate if you soil is of the right structure. A good soil is a balance between mositure holding and drainage. Does your soil need more organic matter ? Organic matter helps hold moisture and nutients. Does your soil have too much clay ? Is it holding too much water ?
Your kit comes standard with two packes of plant ties. These are particularly good for tying up Tomatoes, Beans and other vine crops. They can also be used around the garden for other uses. If you live in WA or TAS we will send you an extra packet of plant ties instead of seeds as seeds can not be sent by mail into these states.
