Growing bougainvillea in a pot on a patio

Questions & Answers

Hi,

Can I grow a bougainvillea in a tub/pot to climb a stone column, north facing aspect pergola.  What feeding and soil requirements would such a plant require?  How much water is required.

Answer:

Hello,

Bougainvillea make great potted plants and can last for many years in a pot.  The secret is to choose a variety that is appropriate for the situation.  If you have a small pot it is best to go for a dwarf variety like "Bambino"  or medium growing variety like "Temple fire".   If you would like the bougainvillea to grow large then you will need a large pot and keep to the older larger growing varieties.   In regard to fertilizing it is worth keeping your fertlizing to a minimum as fertilizing Bougainvillea has the effect of producing lots of new growth without flowers.   If you want to make your bougainvillea grow quickly then fertilize it with liquid fertilizer like Thrive.   Once you have got the plant to a good size cut back your fertilizers.   In regard to watering Bougainvillea's only need moderate watering in a pot and are quite hardy.   A good watering once or twice a week in summer is required and in winter only a few times a month.
