How far to space plants, to plant a hedge

Hello,

I wish to plant a series of Bush Chistmas plants as a front hedge.   Is April/May a good season to plant these hedges or should I wait until spring ?  Also how far apart should I plant Bush Christmas to maintain a reasonable hedge ?    Cheers Rob

Hi Rob,

Because you live in a warm climate (Brisbane) April/May is an excellent time to plant a hedge of Bush Christmas.    If you plant in April/May you will find that by spring they will really take off and grow quickly.    In regard to spacing the Bush Christmas the law is "the taller you want the hedge to be, the further you space the plants".   If you want a low hedge of around 1m, put them about 60cm apart.    If you want a taller hedge then put them 1m apart.    You will find that the futher you put them apart the longer it will take to fill out the hedge.     It may be worth getting some advanced stock it will save a lot of time (although a bit more expensive).    Bush Xmas grows at a medium growth rate compared with some other hedge plants.
