Hi,
I was hoping you could give me some advice. I have been trying to strike some hibiscus cuttings, nothing I do seems to work. I have taken both new growth and hard wood cuttings prepared them by removing most of the leaves and buds, applying hormone powder and planting them in potting mix for cuttings. It has been nearly 3 months and although they started to shoot new leaves and look like they are still alive they have not shot any roots.
Could you suggest anything I might do different and is there any hope for my current cuttings?
Regards Maryanne
Answer:
Hi Maryanne,
By what you have told me it sounds like you are making a very good attempt to get your cuttings growing. I think your problem may be at the point when you take the cuttings. You will need to take semi-hardwood cuttings. This is wood which is still flexible. You will need to remove most of the leaves and buds like you have stated. And place in a very well drained cutting mix. You may need to add some fine river gravel to your mix to increase drainage. Then place it in a warm but not hot spot. Keep moist. It can take a few months for Hibisucus to strike roots. A way to tell if your cuttings will strike is the development of a bump at the base of the cutting. This is where the roots develop. If your cuttings have not developed this lump on the base after a few months they probably will not strike. Generally the secret is not to touch them once you place them into the soil mix, you will know when the cuttings have developed roots when they start producing new stems.
