Hi,
We live in Sydney and have a large existing Bougainvillea plant that is planted hard up against the house. We are considering moving it to our pool area. We would like to take all care in moving this plant and want it to survive. Can you give us any suggestions on how to do this without killing the plant. Thanks Peter.
Answer:
Hi Peter,
Bougainvillea plants are very tough. If you follow a few simple rules your bougainvillea should take root and grow well. The first trick is to cut the plant back before cutting around the roots. When you take from the roots you need to take from the branches. This cuts down the amount of moisture which is lost from the plant. With Bougainvillea plants you can take up to 70 % of the foliage and branches if you need too, the plant will re-shoot. In regard to digging out the roots take as much as you can and neatly slice through the roots and under the plant so you can get a nice root ball out. Get a tarp and place under the root ball. You are now ready to lift or drag your plant it it's new home. Once you have planted your Bougainvillea you will need to stake it. The focus should be on stopping it from moving in the wind. You might like to use a few stakes. Keep your bougainvillea watered well, but do not fertilise for around 1 year.
