Making compost using Eucalyptus leaves

Question:

Dear Garden Guide,

I live in a clay soil area in the south west of WA and have a large collection of eucalyptus leaves that I have had decomposing for a  year and a half.  I have added vegetable matter and kitchen scraps and  a little sheep manure, is this okay to put in the garden ?  I am concerned there is too much eucalyptus and the oils or tannins may do some harm.   I am only just establishing my gardens.  Also I want to put in fruit trees and vegetable gardens and want to know if I can use this there as well.  Regards Janine

Answer:

Hi Janine,

You are right to think that the tannins and oils would be a problem as they can act as a growth retarder.   However, after a year and a half of composting and seeing that you have added extras like sheep manure,  I think it would make an excellent soil improver even in the vegetable patch.   I think you could use this compost on any of your plants without harm.
