Question:
Hello,
Can you give us some advice on a hedge please. I recently moved inot a house in Brisbane, we are on a coner block and have a large 6foot cream fence the whole way around. Unfortunately we have had some issues with graffiti on the fence and have decided to plant hedging plants along the fence to deter them. Our biggest issue is that half of the fence is in full sun while the other half is in full shade due to large trees we have on our fence line.
Basically my biggest issue is finding a heding plant that will work in the following conditions a) in full shade and in full sun b) fast growing c) without much watering. Oh! can they be evergreen also please. Thanks for your help. Michelle
Answer:
Hi Michelle,
A plant that meets all your requirements is the Camellia. They grow well in Brisbane and have beautiful flowers in Autumn and Winter. They are evergreen and live a long time. They will grow in sun or shade in your part of the world. There are two major types, sasanqua and Japonica. In the longer term the japonicas would be great but they are a little slow growing. The sasanqua type would be good if you want a taller still hedge and they grow fairly quickly if they get lot of water in the early stages. Once established they are generally drought tolerant.
