When and how to fertilise camellia plants

It is best to fertilise Camellia plants during the growing season which is normally the warmest time of the year.   They have a long period of growth and will grow rapidly from spring to Autmun in good climates.   In climates with very warm summers growth may reduce somewhat.   So fertilising in Spring and in early Autumn is advised.  Like Azaleas, Camellias like an acid soil, a soil around 5.5 pH is a good base.  You can alter soil pH by using Sulphur or Sulphate of iron.  The later has the affect of pruducing dark green foliage.   Best to use an Acid loving plant food such as Azalea & Camellia feriliser,  although general purpose fertilisers will still develop good growth.   Using an Azalea & Camellia food during the growing season will also help produce a good flowering, during the cooler months.   Some of the new slow release fertilisers are good to use on Camellias, but if you want faster growth a granular or liquid fertiliser is more effective.   Liquid fertilisers can be purchased for Camellia plants,  the use of these should be done carefully as it is possible to easily overdose your plants.   When using a granular fertiliser around 50grams per m2 (about a good handful) used once or twice in Spring and the same in Autumn is advised.
