Many standard & shaped plants need reqular fertilizing. The reason for this is because the plants are pruned regularly. As a result of regular pruning the plant responds by trying to produce new foliage, hence the need for extra fertilizing. It is not uncommon for standard and shaped plants to be fertilized twice to three times per year. Were possible use an organic fertilizer like a manure. The best time to fertilize is when the plant is actively puting on new growth, during the growing season. Many standard and shaped plants respond very well to the use of granular fertilizers. General purpose garden fertilizer is sufficient for most types of plants. A dose of around 40grams per square metre, spread around the root zone, is sufficient.
