When and how to prune Camellia plants

The best time to prune Camellia plants is after flowering.  Generally speaking the period after flowering is when they produce lots of new growth.   The types of tools to use are secateurs, heavy bypass loppers or hedge sheers.  Make sure that your pruning gear is clean this will reduce the occurance of any dead stem, or die back of stems.  You can cut back the hardwood if required.  The plants may however take a little while to rejuvenate,  but they will regrow.   If you are shaping or hedging your camellia plants it is imporant to get the required shape.  After this it is a process of using hedging sheers to mantain shape of the plants.  It is important to remember that Camellias do take a long time for the flower buds to develop so heavy pruning should only be done up to a couple of months after flowers.  Pruning after this period will result in the loss of many flowers for next season.
