Vine plants can be pruned in a number of ways depending on the eventual effect you are looking for. If you want the vine plant to grow straight up or trained up a trellis, it is important not to prune through the main canes. Maintain the canes and cut through the lateral stems, this will help thicken up the foliage around the canes without shortening the plant. If you want to make the plant broaden out or espalier, then it is important to cut the canes at the required point. The plant will then produce new shoots and resulting canes or stems from close to this point. The resulting look of the plant will be one which has many shorter stems and a broader habit. You can use loppers or secateurs to prune vine plants and in some cases the use of hedge trimmers will be of use to maintain the new foliage to the shape you want.
