Canna lily plants have a dormant period in winter. They tend to die back and the plants generally lose vigour. This is a good time to cut back your Canna lily plants. They will grow back larger and stronger next year. This also helps the general look of the plants as they can look a bit drab in the winter months. Canna lily plants grow from rhizomes under the soil and freely produce new stems. The flowering of Canna plants can also be improved by regular pruning as each new stem which is produced, produces new flowers.
