When and how to prune Bougainvillea plants

Bougainvillea plants can be pruned any time of year.   They do have periods when the plants produce more flowers, so it is best to prune after the major flowerings.   They are plants which can be pruned hard when required.  This means pruning them close to ground level if required.   The plants will produce lots of new growth.   If you prefer to keep Bougainvillea in a shaped form, then only cut back to the hard wood.  You will know this as it tends to be stems which are thick and have hard thorns.  Pruning can be done with heavy bypass pruners or if you have aBougainvillea hedges you can use hedging sheers.   When using hedging sheers just take off the soft wood stems and the plant will bush up greatly.
