Petunias
Petunias are one of the best know and used annuals around the world. Petunias grow to a height of around 15cm and a spread of around 40cm at maturity. The plant produces masses of colourful flowers. Petunia plants constantly have a flower display, with colours such as white, pruple, red, blue, pinks and even black !!. Peturnias grow as a groundcover and are best as a mass plantings in garden beds. they prefer full sun and an organically rich soil. They also make an excellent window box or patio potted plant. Petunias grow like a true annual and only grow through the warmer parts of the year. Good watering is required.
Portulaca
Portulaca are a small succulent looking groundcover which is known for its vibrant coloured flowers. Growing to a height of 10cm and a spread of around 30cm. The colours available are incredible, the plant producing many various colours on the one plant ! The colours available are lemon, mauve, pink, salmon, white, red and crimson. Portulaca is used mainly as a rockery and boarder plant. They grow in the warmer parts of the year. Planting occurs in early spring. The great advantage of using Portulaca is that they do not requie as much water as other annuals. They will also grow in sandy soils. Full sun is important. Another feature of Portulaca is that they will self seed and pop up around the garden in future years.
Everlasing Daisy - Helichrysum & Rhodanthe
A winter/spring annual plant native to Australia. Everlasing daisies are a broad group of plants that are grown for their fabulous flowers. As the name implies the flowers also last a very long time ! The two genus Helichrysum and the Rhodanthe are most used of the Everlastings as garden plants, Rhodanthe being the most popular.
Calendula - English Marigold
Calendulas are a group of clumping, soft leaf annuals (sometimes lasting for a few years in warm temperate climates) which grow to around 40cm tall. There are also more dwarf varieties available. The flower colours are mainly in the yellow to burnt orange range, like Marigolds. Calendulas flower in the winter ,spring and in summer in temperate climates, but in cool temperate areas mainly in the spring summer period. They are a good boarder plants for for mass plantings, but can also be used in pots. Grow in full sun. they are a little hardier then many other annuals such as Petunias and require less water. Heavy soils are suitable, as long as they are well drained.
