Bougainvillea is a shrub/vine that is grown for it's hardy nature and fantastic flowers. It is better suited to larger gardens unless it is kept well controlled. Left unpruned it will grow up to 4m in a large mass. The flowers are actually colourful leaves which are borne on new growth, so pruning can enhance the flowering. In warmer areas it will flower most of the year. In cooler areas it flowers in the warmer times of the year. The large thorns are a drawback of this plant, so plant it away from paths etc. There are many colours available reds, whites, mauves and pinks. Bougainvillea will grow in most soils, but does best in well drained, organic soils. Frost tender but will regenerate. NSW,QLD,VIC,NT,SA,WA.
Shrub to 3m, most times around 1.5m, a dwarf variety is available to around 60cm. The flowers on this shrub are very unusual and come out in three variations as the flowers age. Purple, Mauve and White all on the one plant ! The shrub is best suited to NSW and QLD, but can grow in VIC,SA and WA with good watering and care. Full sun to partial shade. Frost Tender.
