Umbrella shaped tree to a height of around 10m and a widith of 15m. Poincianna is generally pruned early in development to prduce a shorter truck and most in cultivation will be around 6m tall. The tree becomes deciduous in late winter prior to flowering, which occurs in spring and summer. Totally covered with orange/red flowers it is one of the most spectacular trees for a tropical style garden. Best grown in tropical and sub-tropical areas, but it can also be grown in warm temperate regions as well. Full sun and a loamy well drained soil are best.
This is a small tree/shrub with a height of 4m and a widith of 3m. In sub-tropical climates the tree will be semi-deciduous and in temperate climates it may be come totally deciduous in winter. The wonderful red colouring of this plant comes not from flowers, but from the red leaves (bracts) which cover the plant in spring to autumn. The plant often turns totally red in the autumn. Once established it is a moderately hardy plant and does not need much care. Grow in full sun, in a well drained organic soil.
Norfolk Island Hibiscus is a tree which has a height or around 8m and a widith of 4m. The foliage grows thickly and is a lime green colour. The flowers are pink and have a yellow stamen in the centre. The flowers develop over late spring and summer and are prolific. Seed pods are produced after flowering. These seed pods can create a mess under the tree when they drop, as there are masses of them. These trees are very hardy and great for coastal planting if you have a good sized garden. They create good protection in windy areas. Suitable for warm temperate and sub-tropical areas. Grow in full sun, in a well drained organic soil.
A lush looking tree from the south of the United States. It grows to a height of 10m and can grow even wider to around 15m. These are a majestic tree given space to spread, but in most suburban gardens, it will grow to around 5 to 6m tall. The flowers of this tree are white and enormous, each being around 30cm wide. Flowering occurs in spring and early summer, the flowers have a strong, attractive perfume. Seed pods are produced after flowering. Best grown in full sun in a rich soil. Sub-tropical to warm temperate climates are preferred by this tree.
