Morus pendula alba - Weeping Mulberry Tree

The Weeping Mulberry Tree is a small, grafted, deciduous feature tree.    Weeping Mulberries will grow to a height of around 4m with a spread of 4m.  The eventual size of the tree will be effected by the manner in which it is pruned.    TheWeeping Mulberry are grown for their beautiful flowing form, which is reminiscent of water flowing from a fountain.   This shape is particularly obvious when the tree has lost it's leaves in winter, displaying the arching branches, which will grow to the ground if left unpruned.   Many gardeners prune their Weeping Mulberry trees in winter to the shape of an umbrella.  No flowers are produced, but the tree will produce small red mulberry fruit in spring and summer, which birds love. Weeping Mulberries are a hardy drought tolerant tree, with no major pests.  They live for many years and will grow in a wide variety of soils.   

Arbutus unedo - Irish Strawberry Tree

The Irish Strawberry Tree is a hardy and unusual looking tree which can grow to a height of around 6m.   The tree normally has a short truck, with a bushy rounded spread.   The tree is evergreen and drought tolerant in cool temperate to temperate climates.   It can also withstand moderately heavy frosts.    The foliage is small, green and glossy.    The Irish Strawberry Tree produces many red, rounded fruit, which look similar in colour and texture to a strawberry.   (not suitable for eating)  The fruit hang on the tree for much of the year.      This tree can be shaped and responds well to pruning any time of the year.      Strawberry trees can live a very long time 100 years plus and will grow in most soils including heavy clay soils.     Generally this is a very low maintenance tree, once planted and shaped it will require minimal care.

Cercis siliquastrum - Judas Tree

The Judas tree is an small flowering tree to around 5m.   It is deciduous and very hardy once established.    The Judas tree grows naturally around southern europe and into asia.  It has been a popular tree in the past as a reliable, drought tolerant tree for a broad range of climatic zones from cool temperate to mediterranean.    Soft pink flowers are produced in early spring.   Judas trees will grow in well drained soils, it is a good tree to grow in limestone areas where other trees will not grow.   It has a long life and will need little care once established.    Grow in a full sun position.     Great for larger cottage and country gardens.
