Identify this tree please - Christine - Newcastle
Hi
I have a 15 year old tree which was labelled Alnus acuminata when I bought it. I bought it as we have boggy soil and to grow quickly and it has worked brilliantly. However, I 've recenlty have been reading about this tree (the tree indicated on the lable) in books, and it bears no resemblance to the tree we have. Can you identify this tree for us, we have enclosed a photo. Christine, Newcastle NSW
Answer
Hi Christine,
From the pictures that you sent us, I can tell you that this is a Ulmus.... an Elm tree. It looks like a Chinese Elm tree. They are quite a versatile tree, as they will grow in a variety of climates. In areas which do not have very cold winters they tend to stay almost evergreen. In cold climates they will lose all their leaves. They seem to grow much larger in colder climates. Which can be to around 15m. We have enclosed a picture of a small one. They make a good shade tree for a large backyard.
