Yucca growing very large - Kim, NSW
Hi,
We planted a Yukka in our garden, adjacent to our water feature 4 years ago, it has become massive, with a trunk about the size of a bread and butter plate and still growing. Can I transplant them or cut them back ? What is the best way to do this, they are close to six feet tall. Thanks Kim
Answer
Kim,
Some varieties of Yucca can grow large, but seldom would you see them as large as they grow in Mexico. It is possible that the one you have, could grow to around 3mtrs, as most seem to grow to this size in Australia. The great thing about Yucca plants is that they can be cut back and you can transplant them. The best time to do this is in winter, as we have seen them die back in summer if pruned hard. Just make sure that you make very clean cuts, so the wounds heal up. The new stems will develop from the sides of the old stems. You could cut yours down to one third of the original size if you want and then just repeat the process every couple of years.
