Flowering plum - Prunus nigra

A pretty small tree to around 4 to 5m mtrs.   Flowering plums have a dark purple leaf which make them very ornamental for large and small gardens.   Light pink flowers develop in early spring.  Traditionally this tree does not produce fruit, however some trees develop a small fruit now and then after flowering.   This is a very hardy tree also and will grow in a wide varitey of climates from temperate to cool termperate environments.  One thing that makes flowering plums very popular is the fact they are drought tolerant and are used extensively as street trees.   In regard to pruning this tree requires very little, as it develops a natural vase shape when mature.
