A very popular hedge plant. Grown for its beautiful new red growth and the low maintenance habit. Grows best in sub-tropical to cool temperate regions. Suitable for hedges from 1.5m to 4m tall. Makes an excellent screen plant. New red growth appears in late winter and also in spring. However, in some areas red new growth develops all year around. Drought tolerant once established. If left unpruned will develop attractive bunches of white flowers. Requires a prune 3 times a year minimum, however regular pruning (Eg once every two months) will keep the plant thick and bushy. Does not require much fertiliser, but the addition of some general purpose NPK will increase growth substantially. Can be a little slow growing in early stages, however after about two years growth really takes off. Plants will live for quite a long period, 50 years plus. No major pest problems with this variety. Grows best in full sun, however will take semi-shade in warm climates.
